Homemade Creamy Buttermilk Blue Cheese Dressing

Kathy Moulding
Learn how to make your own buttermilk blue cheese dressing. It's creamy, tangy, and perfect for salads, dipping, or drizzling over wings.

Equipment

  • Medium bowls
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Airtight container for storage

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup buttermilk store-bought or your own buttermilk
  • 1 cup mayonnaise not Miracle whip
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 ounces crumbled blue cheese more if you want a stronger flavor
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk the cup of buttermilk, mayonnaise, and sour cream until smooth and creamy.
  • Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, sugar, dry mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well to distribute the flavors evenly.
  • Gently fold in the blue cheese crumbles. Break up any large chunks for a smooth, even texture for best results.
  • Give it a taste—add more salt, pepper, or blue cheese if desired.
  • Transfer the dressing to an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour. This allows the flavors to meld and develop for the best taste.

Notes

If you're looking for a lighter or healthier version of this blue cheese dressing, consider these substitutions:
  • Greek Yogurt Instead of Sour Cream: Greek yogurt provides a protein boost while maintaining creaminess.
  • Olive Oil Mayonnaise: Swap regular mayo for a light mayo, olive oil-based, or avocado mayo for healthier fats.
  • Low-Fat Buttermilk: Using low-fat buttermilk reduces overall fat content without sacrificing flavor.
  • Reduced-Fat Blue Cheese: Opt for a reduced-fat blue cheese to maintain taste while cutting calories.
  • Honey Instead of Sugar: A small amount of honey can provide natural sweetness instead of refined sugar.
